What This Program Covers & Who It’s For
Healthcare staff will learn how to spot warning signs in autistic patients that others may miss, as well as verbal and nonverbal tips for communicating empathetically and resolving conflicts swiftly. The de-escalation techniques for autism within our De-escalate to Safe State (DESS) protocol focus on appropriate responses that keep everyone, including patients and staff, safe. This program gives healthcare workers, nurses, and caregivers practical tools to communicate more effectively with patients with autism, helping every interaction feel more supportive, informed, and meaningful.
Overview of Outcomes
Workplace safety is a top priority for healthcare institutions. We’ve developed our de-escalation techniques for autism based on the most recent research and best practices to keep staff and the patients they care for out of harm’s way. This can not only lead to better patient outcomes but also increase staff morale and confidence.

Additionally, our training fortifies each participant’s verbal and nonverbal communication skills, which are critical for understanding and working with autistic patients. Being able to quickly decode and communicate intentions can help ease frustration in patients. Staff will also understand how to create sensory-friendly environments, further reducing the chances of aggressive or violent behavior.

Our de-escalation techniques for autism are fully compliant with all federal and state requirements for workplace violence prevention programs. This allows healthcare institutions that work with us to reduce their legal risk exposure while creating an environment where workers and their patients can thrive.
Why ITTC for Autism De-escalation Techniques?
At ITTC, our trainers are law enforcement officers, martial artists, and healthcare providers who have worked extensively in the field. They have encountered many real-world conflicts and deeply understand which de-escalation techniques for autism work.

With a niche focus on hospitals and healthcare settings, we are dedicated to training employees who work with challenging patients. Rather than offering generic advice that may or may not produce tangible safety outcomes, we teach de-escalation techniques for autism that will work when it matters most.

Though self-defense training can be helpful, ITTC prioritizes teaching skills that will prevent the need for hands-on tactics. Our de-escalation workshops focus on preventive measures, such as understanding warning signs and bringing a patient back to a calm state. This creates a greater sense of confidence in your care team.
Autism Care De-escalation Training Program Structure
Assessment
Our training is never generic; instead, we’ll develop your program in partnership with your team.
The first step is a discovery meeting with nurse leadership, education, and security teams. We’ll get a comprehensive overview of your current de-escalation techniques for autism and discuss your policy constraints and pain points. Then, we’ll work within that framework to provide training in the areas that need it most.

Customization
We plan scenario-based training sessions tailored to your hospital’s or clinic’s unique needs. Our team will work to understand population risks and documentation requirements for each team, department, or unit. Then, we’ll create specific scenarios that reflect what your healthcare providers actually face day-to-day.

This will serve to build their confidence and ensure they know how to respond appropriately when conflicts arise.

Delivery
At ITTC, our program delivery is just as flexible and customizable as our development process. Because we know that healthcare is a hands-on industry, our team will come to you with on-site workshops delivered in the very environment your team will be working in every day.
Training sessions include plenty of de-escalation techniques for autism, complete with role-play scenarios and skills labs proven to build competency.

Our team also understands that training must be ongoing to be effective. That is why we provide support beyond the initial set of workshops. This additional training is delivered in a highly convenient virtual format. Through these refresher courses, we aim to deepen your team’s knowledge and reinforce critical safety tactics.

Measurement
We know that your goal in teaching de-escalation techniques for autism is to create a safer workplace for your employees. Our team will conduct pre- and post-training confidence checks to ensure that your team is ready to put the material into practice.

Core Skills for Autism-Supportive De-escalation
Your healthcare workers will learn de-escalation techniques for autism that help them defuse tense situations so that they never turn into crises. These may include minimizing sensory input to reduce overwhelm, or using a low-and-slow approach when speaking and moving to avoid creating the impression of a threatening environment.

They’ll also learn verbal and nonverbal de-escalation techniques, such as positive and neutral language and active listening. They’ll be encouraged to provide choices to increase patients’ sense of autonomy and control.
Finally, staff will learn to spot warning signs so that they can put de-escalation techniques to work early, preventing the need for self-defense tactics.
What Do Our Healthcare Clients Think About Our Training?
I wanted to thank you and your team at Iron Temple for a great partnership over the last two years. Your team’s professionalism, attention to detail, and mastery of the subject have been an invaluable resource to my staff’s education and training. They are expertly prepared for the rigors of the healthcare security and safety profession and are able to recognize and defuse incidents routinely.

My system workplace violence data has decreased by approximately 20% and most importantly, staff injuries have reduced by more than 50%. I am glad to be able to say that my staff have not had a single day out of work due to workplace violence-related injuries.
