What Is This Training & Who Is It For?
Many nurses routinely face conflict with patients who could potentially become violent at any time due to medical conditions, medication side effects, and even environmental stressors. Iron Temple Training Center’s (ITTC) de-escalation training for nurses will give you the tools you need to get back to a peaceful state.

ITTC’s training teaches your staff our proprietary De-escalate to Safe State (or DESS) technique, developed by first responders with decades of experience under their belt.

DESS takes an empathetic approach to conflict resolution, focusing on verbal and non-verbal communication that defuses tense conditions and puts staff safety at the forefront.
Overview of Outcomes
In addition to achieving full compliance with federal and state regulations, we’ll equip your team with the tools and confidence they need to diffuse potentially violent situations. They’ll participate in real-world scenarios based on situations they’ve faced in the past or may encounter in the future.

Through ITTC’s de-escalation training for nurses, your team will become proficient in verbal and nonverbal communication methods that prevent and reduce aggressive and violent behavior. They’ll see how softened body language and respecting patients’ personal space can play a pivotal role in turning a violent situation peaceful.

They’ll also discover how to maintain patience and diligently use their active listening skills, even when dealing with their own mental, physical, and emotional fatigue. In regulating their own responses, they’ll be empowered to shift the tone and change the outcome of negative situations.
Why ITTC for Nurses?
Many conflict resolution training programs will teach your staff how to react to violence, in some cases using hands-on tactics in an effort to defend themselves and others from patients’ actions.

What if there were a way your team could actually reduce the number of violent incidents occurring in their units and enhance workplace safety in the process?

ITTC’s de-escalation training for nurses is unique in that it stays focused on preventing violent behavior in the first place, using empathetic communication and other effective non-verbal strategies and techniques. We have deep experience in the healthcare space and understand the specific challenges nurses face when caring for patients.

Our trainers have extensive real-world field experience, so you know the strategies they teach are relevant and proven to work. Hospitals and clinics in California, Texas, and New Jersey will receive state-specific training aligned with the most current state laws.
Nurse De-escalation Training Program Structure
Assessment
The first step of the process for building and optimizing de-escalation training for nurses is to conduct a discovery session with your nurse leadership team, your learning and development manager, and your security team.

Together, we review your current workplace violence prevention program and identify policy constraints that could actually exacerbate issues across your organization.
We’ll also look at hotspots, including affected departments and demographics, and create a viable plan to address them to improve safety for all nurses.

Customization
Once we understand the critical issues facing each department, we’ll customize your de-escalation training to meet every area’s unique needs. This includes unit-specific scenarios that mirror what your nurses are likely to encounter within the workplace.

Our training program development takes specific population risks into account, so you can rest assured that prevention and response strategies are always appropriate.

We’ll also work to understand each area’s documentation needs so that we can make sure all methods align with applicable federal and state laws and work well for your organization.

Delivery
All of ITTC’s initial de-escalation training for nurses is conducted onsite. This allows us to create a truly interactive experience for your healthcare professionals.

Your team will engage in hands-on learning with role-play scenarios and skills labs. They’ll think through situations they have or may face at work and develop solutions for successfully navigating conflict.

After the training is complete, our team can provide ongoing support for your healthcare facility in the form of virtual refreshers and classes. This keeps de-escalation strategies and techniques top of mind and makes sure your training protocols are always in line with ever-changing federal and state regulations.

Measurement
At ITTC, we understand that measuring learning outcomes helps your leadership make sure your nurses have the skills they need to keep conflict and violence at bay. This is why we conduct pre- and post-training confidence checks that allow you to assess whether your nurses are ready to put their new knowledge into action.

Specialized Nursing Modules
Our de-escalation training accounts for the needs and risks of various populations your healthcare facility may be working with. This is why we offer specialized classes for caregivers and nurses working with dementia patients, as well as those who serve individuals with autism.

We’ll teach your staff verbal and non-verbal techniques to manage agitation and aggression in these patient populations to prevent crises and ensure the safety of both the patient and the staff at all times.
