Train the Trainer: Build In-House De-Escalation Expertise at Your Healthcare Facility
Is your healthcare organization ready to move beyond one-time training events and build a sustainable, in-house workplace violence prevention program? ITTC’s Train the Trainer program certifies your designated staff to deliver our proven de-escalation and clinical response training internally — giving you the ability to train new hires, refresh existing staff, and maintain compliance year-round.
Why Train the Trainer?
Many hospitals find that annual or semi-annual training sessions from outside vendors, while effective, leave gaps in coverage. New employees wait months for the next scheduled session. Staff who need refreshers have no access between visits. And the cost of bringing in external trainers repeatedly adds up quickly.
ITTC’s Train the Trainer model solves these problems by creating certified instructors within your own organization. Your designated trainers receive the same rigorous preparation that ITTC’s own instructors undergo, ensuring the quality and consistency of training remains high even when delivered by your internal team.
Who Should Become a Certified ITTC Instructor?
Train the Trainer is designed for experienced staff members who are positioned to lead ongoing training at your facility. Ideal candidates include:
-
Training Department Directors and Coordinators
-
Clinical Educators and Nurse Educators
-
Safety Officers and Security Directors
-
Behavioral Health Team Leaders
-
Charge Nurses and Unit Managers in high-risk departments (ED, Behavioral Health, Geriatrics)
-
Human Resources professionals responsible for staff development
Candidates should have strong communication skills, a comfort level with leading group instruction, and ideally some previous experience with de-escalation or crisis intervention concepts. However, prior ITTC training is not always required — our certification process covers everything from the ground up.
What Programs Can Be Taught Through Train the Trainer?
ITTC offers instructor certification pathways for our core healthcare programs:
-
De-Escalate to Safe State (DESS): Our foundational verbal de-escalation program. Certified DESS instructors can deliver both the online and in-person components to their staff, including the 12 Points of De-escalation methodology.
-
Clinical Staff Response Training (CSRT): Our clinical-specific program covering the 3 Areas of Awareness, Release and Escape techniques, and scenario-based training. Certified instructors can run ongoing SBT (Scenario Based Training) sessions at their facility.
-
Response Control Techniques (RCT): Our physical response program for security and higher-acuity clinical staff. Instructor certification ensures proper technique delivery for the in-person hands-on component.
For organizations that need training across multiple programs, ITTC offers bundled certification paths so your instructors can teach the full continuum of de-escalation through physical response.
How the Train the Trainer Process Works
Step 1: Consultation. An ITTC specialist meets with your team (virtually or in-person) to assess your facility’s training needs, identify the right programs, and determine the number of instructors to certify.
Step 2: Instructor Preparation. ITTC delivers an intensive instructor certification course at your facility. Your candidates learn the curriculum in depth, master facilitation techniques, practice leading sessions under ITTC supervision, and demonstrate competency in every module.
Step 3: Certification. Upon successful completion, your trainers receive ITTC Instructor Certification and are authorized to deliver the designated program(s) at your facility.
Step 4: Ongoing Support. ITTC provides certified instructors with training materials, curriculum updates, and ongoing support. We remain available for consultation, refresher guidance, and quality assurance.

Culture of safety: Instructors embedded in your organization become ongoing advocates for de-escalation and staff safety, reinforcing training principles daily.
Proven Results
Healthcare facilities that have implemented ITTC’s training programs through internal instructors have seen measurable outcomes:
"I wanted to thank you and your team at Iron Temple for a great partnership over the last two years. Your team’s professionalism, attention to detail, and mastery of the subject matter has been an invaluable resource to my staff’s education and training. They are expertly prepared for the rigors of the healthcare security and safety profession and are able to recognize and defuse incidents routinely. My system workplace violence data has decreased by approximately 20% and most importantly staff injuries have reduced by north of 50%. I am glad to be able to say that my staff have not had a single day out of work due to workplace violence-related injuries." — St. Joseph’s Health
